OBJECTIVES

To provide a broader knowledge of materials joining process used in making welds and the main ways to check that there are no significant defects in the welds. On completion of the course, participants know : how to evaluate welding procedure for construction and repairing of equipment.

COURSE CONTENT

1. Welding Processes
Arc welding process : SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, SAW, FCAW, etc
Resistance welding process : spot welding, seam welding
Gas welding process : oxy-fuel gas welding
High density beam welding : EBW, LBW
2. Distortion and Residual Stress
Origin and effect of thermal stress
Origin and effect of distortion
Measurement of residual stress
Residual stress reduction and distortion control
3. Welding Metallurgy
Weld metal and heat affected zone (HAZ)
Steels : carbon steels, alloy steels, HSLA steels, high resistant steels
Aluminium alloys
Stainless steels
4. Weldability and Weld Testing
Cracks in welds and prevention
Weldability tests
Mechanical property tests
5. Non Destruction Test (NDT) / Inspection
Liquid penetrant
Magnetic particle
X-ray inspection (radiography test)
Ultrasonic test
6. Preheat and Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT)
Thermal cycle
Various heaters for PWHT
7. Welding Applications
Welding principles of pipeline
